Darkness, calming and redemption are the themes of numerous motets and cantatas in the work of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose position as Cantor in Leipzig led him to produce dozens of works dedicated to Lutheran cult each year. Laurence Equilbey, a Festival regular, takes up this liturgical material with Insula orchestra and accentus, restoring the flamboyance of Bach’s choirs and the refinement of his polyphonic writing. A final concert in the form of a musical apotheosis to close the pages of an Opus 43 magnified by the greatest master of Baroque music, an unrivalled genius in the art of fugue, counterpoint and composition.
