HENRI DEMARQUETTE

“Passionate musician and multifaceted personality, Henri Demarquette plays the cello as one sets ablaze a deep forest; not one of his bow strokes leaves indifferent because it awakens the unconscious of music ”O. Bellamy (Le Monde de la Musique).

Henri Demarquette, born in 1970, entered at the age of 13 at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he studied with Philippe Muller and Maurice Gendron. Unanimous First Prize winner, he also worked with Pierre Fournier and Paul Tortelier, then with Janos Starker in Bloomington, USA. Familiar with the scene from the age of 14, he began at 17 with a recital at the Théâtre du Châtelet and a television program recorded by France 3 with pianist Hélène Grimaud. He was immediately noticed by Lord Yehudi Menuhin who invited him to play Dvořák’s Concerto under his direction in Prague and Paris.

Since then, his career has taken off internationally, leading him to many capitals accompanied by the largest French and foreign orchestras, such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the France National Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Paris Chamber Orchestra, the Tokyo Symphony, the Bordeaux-Aquitaine National Orchestra, the Urals Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Hannover NDR, and in the company of its privileged pianist partners Boris Berezovsky, Michel Dalberto, Jean-Bernard Pommier or Frank Braley. His interpretation of the concerto Tout un monde lointain by Henri Dutilleux gave rise to a documentary film broadcast on the Mezzo channel. Since 2012, he has been invited by Michel Onfray to speak at the Popular University of Caen. In the company of Jean-Yves Clément, essayist, poet, musician, he evokes various aspects of music in the form of conference talks.
